Some Good News

Jesus went throughout Galiliee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Matthew 4:23 NIV

Matthew 4:23 offers us a beautiful snapshot of the heart of Jesus’ message and ministry. This scripture shows us the power of the Kingdom by revealing what happens when the message and ministry of the Kingdom of God touch real lives. Jesus didn’t simply talk about God’s kingdom—He demonstrated it. His words and His works were inseparable, and together they revealed a God who comes close, restores, heals, and brings hope.

Jesus’ message was simple yet revolutionary: God’s kingdom is here. Since He walked our planet, have we made the message more complicated than He taught? To a people for whom religion was used to separate them and make it impossible to please God, Jesus came with a simple message that opened the pathway for those who had been excluded for so long. What if the message we proclaim today were as simple, grace-laced, and good as it is found here and throughout the gospel accounts of Jesus’ ministry?

Matthew described Christ’s message as “good news.” The life and ministry of Jesus were marked by his association with those the religious class avoided. The truths he taught, coupled with his proximity to those described as “unclean,” illustrate God’s plan that His Kingdom is not only close to Israel but has come to all people, classes, cultures, and creeds.

The “good news” was that God’s reign—His love, mercy, justice, and peace—was breaking into the world through Jesus. Through Him, the broken could be restored, the unclean cleansed, the lost found, and the weary could find rest. When Jesus proclaimed the kingdom, it was an invitation to a new way of life. A life where God is near. A life where grace abounds. A life where hope overrides despair. A life where God’s hands once again touch His creation.

Jesus didn’t simply announce the kingdom; He revealed what it looks like. Wherever He went, the Kingdom manifested by saving the suffering, restoring broken bodies, and releasing the burdened. Darkness pushed back against this Kingdom’s assault but dissipated in the presence of the light of God’s Kingdom as it was manifested on earth.

Every healing Jesus performed was a declaration of the good news, “This is what the reign of God looks like!” Jesus cared about people’s spiritual needs and physical pain. He saw crowds not as problems but as precious people. His compassion moved Him, and His power healed them.

Healing—physical, emotional, and spiritual—remains part of God’s heart today. Although we may not always see it immediately or in the ways we expect, Jesus remains the Healer, bringing restoration in countless ways.
